An "impacted tooth" is any tooth that is unable to fully emerge from under the gum.  By continuing to develop below the gum, these teeth often push functioning teeth out of place. A partially emerged tooth may also trap food and plaque in the soft gum tissue around it, leading to decay or infection.

The teeth that most often become impacted are the third molars, also called wisdom teeth.  These teeth are commonly removed to prevent overcrowding on the jaw.

Procedure

If Dr. Day suspects you have an impacted tooth, he will examine the area and take x-rays or scans to evaluate the problem.  These images also allow for determination of the exact location and positioning of the tooth.

The site will be numbed, and the gum covering the tooth lifted.  This is referred to as “exposure” of the tooth.   The tooth is then gently removed and the gum set to heal.  Often, impacted teeth can be removed under a local anesthetic.
