TMJ, short for temporomandibular dysfunction, can gravely affect the functioning of our jaws if left untreated.

If your jaw gets stiff throughout the day or even clicks and pops, there are two things to consider.

First, there may be a problem with the muscles in the area. Second, there may be a problem with the joint itself. 

TMJ therapies do exist, though. Here are three different avenues to explore, from NSAIDs to dietary changes.  

Medication

Sure, we don’t want to habitually pump our bodies full of medication.

But, if your TMJ seems to ebb and flow with pain, you might want to have a few remedies on hand. 

The first is a basic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like Advil or Tylenol. These can help relieve some of the pain that comes from the swelling at the joint. 

If things are really starting to get difficult, your doctor may consider prescribing a muscle relaxant. If your TMJ is a result of excessive teeth grinding, he or she may find this to be beneficial for you in times of extreme discomfort. 

Therapy

In lieu of pill-popping, there are a few therapies that, when completed regularly, may provide a little relief.

The first is an occlusal guard. This is a device that’s inserted over the teeth and worn to bed at night. This way, if you grind your teeth, at least you won’t be wearing down the enamel or putting tremendous strain on your jaw.

For some, teeth-grinding at night is a side effect of stress. It might sound silly to consider speaking to a counselor about your TMJ. But, in truth, if you can alleviate some of the stressors in your life, then you may not spend your nights restlessly grinding your teeth. 

Home Remedies

At home, you can implement a few practices that might help ease your discomfort.

Try to eat soft foods. Whip up yogurt parfaits for breakfast instead of bagels. Enjoy mashed potatoes and fish for lunch instead of sandwiches. Prep some soups and salads for dinner over tough and chewy steaks. 

Keep both hot and cold compresses handy, too. If you’re advised to complete some simple jaw stretches, you might want to apply a cold compress to the area afterward. This could help keep some of the inflammation at bay.
